Introducing 2022 Associate - Vanessa Pinto

Vanessa is a global Financial Crime Prevention professional having worked in New York, India and now Canada with a passion for learning about regulatory relations, crypto-compliance, sanctions regimes and unconscious bias. Her journey has involved managing teams and processes in a host of financial crime areas including Enhanced Due Diligence, Adverse Media Screening and Transaction Monitoring for global stakeholders. Vanessa was most recently a Director in Morgan Stanley’s Global Financial Crimes (GFC) team and prior to that an AVP with Barclays in their Financial Crimes Compliance team in Mumbai.

In March 2021, Vanessa was invited as a panelist by ACAMS to speak on ‘Algorithmic Bias and its Impact on Financial Inclusion’.

Vanessa is a continual learner and is the first woman in India to have completed the Advanced CAMS-Audit credential and has published a whitepaper on ‘Eyes Wide Shut: Understanding Unconscious Bias in AML Audits (2020)’. She also concurrently holds the Advanced CAMS RM (Risk Management)  and CAMS credentials. Her interest in all things crypto has led her to complete the Chainalysis Cryptocurrency Fundamentals (CCFC) and Reactor (CRC) certifications in 2021 through the Toronto Compliance Events forum (TCAE). She holds compliance credentials from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM Bangalore), Cambridge Judge Business School and Fitch Training.

She began her career in the world of finance as an investment banker and received the Mountbatten-Barclays Graduate Trainee scholarship to work in New York from 2014 to 2015. She is a trained Chemical Engineer with an MBA in Operations Management having worked in ISO quality compliance, Business Process Engineering and Internal Audits as an early career Associate Consultant with Ernst & Young.

In her spare time, Vanessa is an avid volunteer, having mentored students across New York and Mumbai. Her proudest achievement is that she has been able to work and build relationships with over 30 non profits in the spheres of financial literacy, education, healthcare, employment, anti-human trafficking and sustainability,  globally, and feels that it has added a new dimension to her understanding of and commitment to her role. She is a Toastmasters Pathway Champion and enjoys public speaking in addition to painting, Indian classical dancing and singing.
